Inconel 625 printed by laser powder bed fusion is the nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy built layer by layer from fine gas-atomized powder. Rapid solidification gives a fine cellular-dendritic structure with columnar grains along the build direction, so properties can differ between vertical and horizontal builds. Parts have high residual stress and a rough as-built surface, need supports for overhangs, and are usually stress relieved on the plate, then often heat treated, hot isostatically pressed or machined. Printed parts serve as corrosion- and heat-resistant aerospace ducting, combustor components, heat exchangers and chemical-process hardware with complex internal passages.
