Inconel 718 printed by laser powder bed fusion is the nickel-chromium-iron superalloy built from fine gas-atomized powder, melted layer by layer under inert gas. Rapid solidification gives a fine cellular-dendritic structure with columnar grains along the build direction, so as-built properties differ between build orientations, and niobium segregates to cell boundaries. Parts carry high residual stress and a rough surface, so they need stress relief on the plate, support removal, solution and aging treatment, often hot isostatic pressing, and machining of critical surfaces. Typical uses are turbine and combustor components, heat exchangers, manifolds and ducts.
