Hastelloy X printed by laser powder bed fusion is a solid-solution-strengthened nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum superalloy built layer by layer from gas-atomized powder. Rapid solidification gives a fine cellular structure with columnar grains along the build direction, so properties differ between vertical and horizontal builds. The alloy is prone to microcracking and parts retain high residual stress, so they need supports, stress relief before removal from the plate, and machining of rough surfaces. Hot isostatic pressing and solution annealing are commonly applied to close porosity. Typical parts are combustor components, fuel nozzles and ducting for gas turbines.
