Ti-6Al-4V printed by laser powder bed fusion is the alpha-beta titanium alloy built layer by layer from fine powder, melted by a laser under inert gas. Rapid solidification produces a fine acicular martensitic microstructure, often with columnar prior beta grains along the build direction, so as-built parts are strong but less ductile and somewhat anisotropic. Parts retain residual stress, need supports and have a rough surface, so they usually receive stress relief, machining and often hot isostatic pressing. Typical uses are lightweight aerospace brackets, lattice structures and medical and industrial hardware.
