316L stainless steel printed by laser powder bed fusion is the low-carbon, molybdenum-alloyed austenitic grade, built by selectively melting fine powder layer by layer. Rapid solidification gives a fine cellular sub-grain structure and columnar grains growing along the build direction, so horizontal and vertical builds can differ. Parts carry high residual stress, so they are built on a plate with supports and stress relieved before removal. Surfaces are rough as printed and are often machined or polished, and small pores can remain unless the part is densified. Typical uses are corrosion-resistant manifolds, heat exchangers, fluid-handling parts, tooling and lightweight brackets.
