17-4PH stainless steel printed by laser powder bed fusion is a precipitation-hardening martensitic steel built layer by layer from gas-atomized powder. Rapid solidification gives a fine, directional microstructure that often retains more austenite than wrought material, and properties differ between the build direction and the layer plane. Parts carry residual stress and a rough surface, so they need supports and stress relief before removal from the plate. Aging, or solution treatment and aging, sometimes after hot isostatic pressing to close porosity, sets the strength and toughness balance. Typical uses are brackets, housings, tooling and fluid-handling parts with complex geometry.
