Inconel 625 in the as-built condition is the nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy exactly as it leaves the L-PBF machine, before stress relief, hot isostatic pressing or solution treatment. Rapid solidification gives fine cellular-dendritic grains, often elongated along the build direction, with niobium and molybdenum segregated between cells, so properties can vary with orientation. High residual stress can distort parts once they are cut from the plate, and surfaces are rough with supports to remove. The state is mainly a starting point for heat treatment and machining of parts for corrosion- and heat-exposed service, such as ducting and heat exchangers.
