Questions

Both products

Where does the data come from?

Open sources and the makers themselves, and every value carries its citation and a confidence score.

  • Peer-reviewed papers with DOI links.
  • The public-domain U.S. DoD handbooks MIL-HDBK-5J (metals) and MIL-HDBK-17 (composites) — every curve carries its figure number.
  • Openly licensed research databases, measured and computed.
  • Computed values are labelled with the DFT method behind them, so a computed band gap never passes for a measured one.
  • Printed materials: the makers' own material data sheets — each value quoted, cited and dated, and labelled until a person reviews it — and openly licensed test data and papers. A printed material's strength is always measured as printed, never borrowed from the wrought alloy.
How does plain-English search work?

Type a sentence — “lightweight alloy for 300 °C”, “titanium with yield above 800 MPa” — and get a ranked shortlist with the numbers that put each material there.

  • Each result shows the value that met your bound, where it stands among the candidates, and the hottest temperature its data reaches.
  • Every filter is a chip you can remove; when nothing matches, the page names the constraint to drop and how many materials that unlocks.
  • Results come from handbook alloys, tempers, polymers and laminates — computed compounds only when you ask for a computed property.
  • In Additive it also reads the process, the post-build condition, the maker and the build direction — “printed 316L, HIP, Z direction” — and a printer search turns a description into limits on the machines' cited specs.
  • Pro, 20 searches a day, shared with your agent.
Can my AI agent use MatWorld?

Yes, on Pro: a remote MCP server at api.matworld.ai/mcp with 15 tools.

  • Search by designation or keyword, a datasheet summary sized for a context window, the property rows behind any key (paged and filtered, each with its source), a curve index and any single curve.
  • Side-by-side comparison, regulatory screening, the property catalogue, and plain-English search on the same 20-a-day allowance as the search box.
  • CAE export — any of the 11 formats returned as file text, after the same one-time data-notice acknowledgment the site asks for.
  • Additive: printed materials by build direction, maker and condition, and the 3D printers — search them by process, maker or part size, or in plain English, every spec with the sentence it was quoted from.
  • Connect with a personal key (Settings → Agent access) from Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI or an agent built on the Anthropic, OpenAI or Gemini API — or add the URL as a custom connector in Claude.ai, Claude Desktop or ChatGPT and sign in with your MatWorld account.
  • Every answer carries the same source citations and data notice as the site.
What about regulatory screening?

Pass/fail outcomes for all 22 regulations, free with an account.

  • RoHS, REACH SVHC, Prop 65, TSCA, Conflict Minerals, ITAR, EAR and more.
  • RoHS, REACH SVHC and Prop 65 are validated against the official ECHA and OEHHA substance lists.
  • Each result shows the underlying substance list, threshold values, CAS numbers and source citations.
  • Printed materials are screened against all 22 too: chemistry carries over from the base alloy or polymer, and rules about the product form — AMS, ASME, ISO 10993, UL 94 — are assessed for the printed part and never read better than the base.

Engineering

What is model calibration?

Upload your own stress-strain, creep, relaxation or DMA curves and fit a constitutive model — Johnson-Cook, Ogden, Mooney-Rivlin, Chaboche, Prony series or Hill.

  • Setup is free with an account; running the fit is Pro and unmetered.
  • Every fit returns a PASS / CAUTION / REJECT verdict with named findings: the deformation modes your data never covered, coefficients it does not actually determine, and where the model stops extrapolating.
  • Abaqus and ANSYS cards are emitted only for fits that hold up — a rejected fit gets no card, and costs you nothing.
What CAE formats are supported?

11 formats, each converted to its native unit profile — Abaqus mm-N-s, LS-DYNA g-mm-ms, ANSYS SI and the rest.

  • Abaqus (.inp), LS-DYNA (.k), ANSYS APDL (.mac)
  • Ansys Workbench Engineering Data (.xml, MatML) — imports across Mechanical, Fluent, CFX and LS-DYNA
  • Nastran (.bdf), including the Simcenter Nastran NX and OptiStruct dialects
  • Radioss (.rad), SolidWorks (.sldmat), CSV, JSON

Additive

What is the build planner?

Start from your part: drop an STL, OBJ or 3MF file or type its size, say what it must reach, and get the printed materials that meet it and the machines it fits.

  • Set-up is free with an account: your part in 3D, each printed material's strength in the build plane and built upright, and what the part needs.
  • The matches are Pro: each need is judged on a cited value in the direction the part is loaded — the most conservative one stated — and each machine shows your part inside its build envelope.
  • Your part file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
  • Pro can also plan a build from a plain-English description, on the same 20-a-day allowance.
Where do the machine specs come from?

From each maker's own product page or data sheet — 195 3D printers, desktop to industrial, across 17 ISO/ASTM 52900 processes.

  • Every value keeps the sentence it was quoted from, its source and the date it was read.
  • A value our pipeline read is labelled until a person has reviewed it.
  • A price appears only with its source and date; otherwise the page says the price is on request.
  • Each machine lists the materials its maker says it prints, and links each one's page once something has been measured on it as printed.
Are print parameters included?

Not yet. They are what comes next.

  • Print parameters for the machine and material you choose — laser power, scan speed, layer and hatch — taken only from peer-reviewed papers with a DOI.
