Tantalum nitride (TaSN) is a refractory ceramic compound combining tantalum and nitrogen, known for high hardness and thermal stability at extreme temperatures. It is explored primarily in research and advanced coating applications, particularly for wear-resistant surface treatments, thermal barrier coatings in aerospace engines, and diffusion barriers in semiconductor metallization where conventional materials degrade. Engineers select TaSN-based systems when exceptional hardness, chemical inertness, and performance above 1000°C are required, though availability and processing complexity limit adoption compared to more established ceramics like alumina or titanium nitride.
