NaYF₃ (sodium yttrium fluoride) is an inorganic ceramic compound belonging to the fluoride family, valued primarily as a host material for rare-earth ion doping in photonic and lighting applications. It is widely used in upconversion phosphors, laser materials, and medical imaging agents where ytterbium and erbium ions are embedded to enable wavelength conversion and fluorescence under infrared excitation. Engineers select NaYF₃ over alternative phosphor hosts because of its low phonon energy, high transparency in the infrared-visible range, and excellent photostability, making it essential for next-generation displays, bioimaging systems, and solid-state laser devices.
