Inconel 718 printed by laser powder bed fusion in the as-built condition is the nickel-chromium-iron superalloy as it leaves the machine, before any stress relief, hot isostatic pressing or aging. Rapid melting and solidification give cellular-dendritic grains growing in columns along the build direction, with niobium and molybdenum segregated between dendrites, so properties differ between build and in-plane directions. High residual stress remains and can distort parts when they are removed from the build plate, and the surface is rough with support marks. It is used for prototypes, test coupons and parts that will be heat treated and finished afterward, such as turbine and combustor components.
