ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, FDM)

ABS printed by fused deposition modeling is the amorphous acrylonitrile butadiene styrene thermoplastic, extruded from filament and deposited as fused layers. Parts are anisotropic, with the lowest strength and ductility across layer interfaces, so build orientation relative to the load matters, and visible layer lines and small voids between beads are typical. ABS shrinks as it cools, so large flat parts tend to warp unless the bed is heated and the chamber is enclosed. Overhangs need support structures, and surfaces are often sanded or smoothed with solvent vapor. Printed ABS is used for functional prototypes, enclosures, jigs and fixtures that need impact toughness and easy finishing.
