316L Stainless Steel (L-PBF, Renishaw SS 316L-0407, as-built)

Renishaw SS 316L-0407 is a 316L austenitic stainless steel powder grade printed by laser powder bed fusion, here in the as-built condition without heat treatment. Rapid solidification leaves a fine cellular substructure within columnar grains grown along the build direction, making parts stronger but less ductile than annealed wrought 316L and somewhat anisotropic. Parts carry residual stress, need supports and removal from the build plate, and have a rough surface that is machined or polished where finish matters. Typical uses are corrosion-resistant manifolds, valve and pump parts, heat exchangers and tooling with internal channels.
