Nikon SLM Solutions 316L, as-built, is that maker's grade of low-carbon, molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel made by laser powder bed fusion, with no heat treatment after printing. Rapid solidification gives fine cellular sub-grains within columnar grains aligned with the build direction. As a result, parts are stronger but less ductile than annealed wrought 316L and somewhat anisotropic between build directions. Parts retain residual stress and rough downskin and supported surfaces, and their supports must be cut or machined away. Typical uses are corrosion-resistant manifolds, valve bodies, heat exchangers and other fluid-handling parts with complex internal channels. Every value on this page is read from Nikon SLM Solutions' own material data sheet — quoted, cited and dated — and is the maker's statement about printed material, not a measurement by MatWorld; none has yet been reviewed by a person.
