EOS StainlessSteel 316L-4404 printed by laser powder bed fusion and left as-built is a low-carbon, molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel with no post-build heat treatment. Rapid solidification gives a fine cellular sub-grain structure inside columnar grains elongated along the build direction. This makes as-built parts stronger but less ductile than annealed wrought 316L, and somewhat anisotropic. Parts retain residual stress, need supports that are removed along with the build plate, and have a rough surface that is usually machined, blasted or polished. Typical uses are corrosion-resistant fluid-handling components, manifolds, process equipment parts, tooling and functional prototypes. Every value on this page is read from EOS's own material data sheet — quoted, cited and dated — and is the maker's statement about printed material, not a measurement by MatWorld; none has yet been reviewed by a person.
