Colibrium Additive Stainless Steel 316L is a low-carbon, molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel grade built by laser powder bed fusion, here in the solution-treated condition. As printed, it has a fine cellular sub-grain structure within columnar grains aligned with the build direction, with high residual stress and some anisotropy. Solution treatment dissolves this cellular structure and relieves the stress, giving lower strength than as built but higher ductility and more uniform properties across build directions. Parts need support removal and often machining or polishing. Typical uses are fluid manifolds, valve and pump bodies, heat exchangers, and chemical-process or marine hardware with internal channels.
