Markforged 316L Stainless Steel is a sintered grade of low-carbon, molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel made by Bound Metal Deposition (BMD), a material extrusion process. Metal-powder-filled polymer filament is extruded, then the part is debound and furnace sintered, shrinking substantially, so it is printed oversize. The sintered part has an equiaxed austenitic structure with some residual porosity, low residual stress, visible layer lines and somewhat direction-dependent properties, so critical surfaces are usually machined. It is used for jigs, fixtures, tooling, brackets and low-volume corrosion-resistant parts. Every value on this page is read from Markforged's own material data sheet — quoted, cited and dated — and is the maker's statement about printed material, not a measurement by MatWorld; none has yet been reviewed by a person.
