Desktop Metal 316L Stainless Steel (Shop System) is that maker's grade of low-carbon austenitic 316L stainless steel for binder jetting, used in the sintered condition. Parts are printed as green bodies of binder-held powder, then depowdered and furnace-sintered. They shrink substantially as they densify, so designs must allow for shrinkage and sagging. The sintered structure is equiaxed austenite with some residual porosity, more uniform between build directions than laser-melted 316L, and it needs no supports and carries little residual stress. Typical uses are production runs of small brackets, fluid fittings, hardware and tooling parts that would otherwise be machined, cast or metal injection molded.
