Markforged 17-4PH Stainless Steel, heat-treated, is that maker's precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel, printed by bound metal deposition and then solution treated and aged after sintering. Parts are extruded from metal powder held in a polymer binder and printed oversized to allow for shrinkage. They are then debound and sintered, which leaves some residual porosity, visible layer lines and a difference in properties between build directions. The heat treatment precipitates copper-rich particles in the martensite, raising strength and hardness over the as-sintered state at some cost in ductility. Typical uses are tooling, jigs and fixtures, brackets and low-volume functional parts that would otherwise be machined. Every value on this page is read from Markforged's own material data sheet — quoted, cited and dated — and is the maker's statement about printed material, not a measurement by MatWorld; none has yet been reviewed by a person.
