Desktop Metal 17-4PH Stainless Steel (Studio System 2) is that maker's precipitation-hardening stainless steel for bound metal deposition, in the as-sintered condition. Parts are extruded from metal powder held in a polymer binder, then debound and furnace-sintered. They shrink in the process, so they are printed oversize, with a separable interface layer beneath supports. The sintered steel keeps some residual porosity and a layered surface, so critical faces are usually machined, and it can be given a further aging treatment for strength. It is used for jigs, fixtures, tooling, brackets and low-volume functional parts.
