Desktop Metal 17-4PH Stainless Steel (Shop System) is a maker's grade of the precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel printed by metal binder jetting, in the sintered condition. Binder is jetted into a bed of 17-4PH powder to form green parts, which are debound and furnace-sintered with substantial shrinkage, leaving a small amount of residual porosity. With no melt pool, sintered parts are largely isotropic and free of laser-melting residual stress, and the powder bed supports them, so no supports are needed. It is used for batches of small, complex stainless components such as brackets, housings and tooling inserts, often aged and machined where tighter tolerances are needed.
