Desktop Metal 17-4PH Stainless Steel (Shop System) is that maker's grade of 17-4PH precipitation-hardening stainless steel printed by metal binder jetting, here heat-treated. Parts are printed as unsupported green bodies of bound powder, then debound and sintered. They shrink substantially and end with a little residual porosity but without the residual stress of laser melting. Solution treatment and aging after sintering precipitate copper-rich particles in the martensite, raising strength and hardness over the as-sintered state. Typical uses are small, complex functional parts made in batches, such as machine components, tooling and fixtures.
