UO₂ (uranium dioxide) is a ceramic compound and the primary chemical form of uranium fuel used in nuclear reactors. It is a dense, refractory material that remains stable under extreme temperatures and intense radiation, making it the de facto standard for commercial nuclear power generation. Engineers select UO₂ for its ability to withstand the demanding thermal and neutron-irradiation environment of reactor cores while maintaining structural integrity over extended operational periods.
