Rapid melt-pool cooling gives a fine acicular martensite within columnar prior-beta grains along the build direction, so as-built parts are strong but of limited ductility and somewhat anisotropic. Parts are built on supports and carry high residual stress. They are normally stress relieved, often hot isostatically pressed to close porosity and improve fatigue strength, and machined where the rough as-built surface matters. Typical uses include orthopedic implants with porous lattice surfaces and lightweight aerospace brackets.
