BASF Forward AM Ultrafuse 17-4 PH is a filament of 17-4PH stainless steel powder in a polymer binder, printed by material extrusion and then converted into a solid steel part. The printed green part must be catalytically debound and sintered, and it shrinks during sintering, so it is printed oversized to compensate. The sintered steel retains some porosity and a layered surface, and its properties can vary between build directions; functional surfaces are often machined, and parts can be precipitation hardened like the wrought alloy. It is used for jigs, fixtures, tooling, functional prototypes and low-volume metal parts made without a powder-bed system. Every value on this page is read from BASF Forward AM's own material data sheet — quoted, cited and dated — and is the maker's statement about printed material, not a measurement by MatWorld; none has yet been reviewed by a person.
