Desktop Metal 17-4PH Stainless Steel (Studio System 2), heat-treated, is the precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel printed by bound metal deposition and hardened by heat treatment after sintering. Metal powder in a polymer binder is extruded into an oversized green part, then debound and sintered, shrinking to near-full density with some residual porosity. Ceramic interface layers release supports, and layer lines usually need machining or blasting where fit or finish matters. The heat treatment precipitates copper-rich particles in the martensite, raising strength and hardness over the as-sintered state. Parts serve as tooling, jigs, fixtures and low-volume functional components.
